Makun community celebrates 2024 Obaruwa Day


The indigenes of Makun, Sagamu in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State will from Sunday 18 to Saturday 24, February 2024 roll out drums to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the ancient community in an annual event tagged Obaruwa Festival.

The Chairman, Planning Committee of the 2024 Obaruwa Festival, Otunba Joseph Atoloye in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, said that, the beauty of the annual festival lies in its potentials to help not only to preserve the cultural heritage of Makun people but to also help in strengthening brotherhood, unity and peaceful coexistence of the residents of the community.

Otunba Atoloye said "we can't but thank the Almighty God for sparing our lives to witness this year Obaruwa Festival, the 26th edition. It is a festival that is celebrated by all sons and daughters of Makun, it is a festival that we celebrate with pomps and pageantry because it serves the ultimate purpose of helping to promote and preserve our rich cultural heritage. 

"The festival also serves as platform to foster unity of purpose, promotes peaceful coexistence and rally support for the expansion of the frontiers of socio-economic development of our native land. 

"It is a festival we are eager to celebrate every year and the theme for this year's festival is "Exploring Cultural Values and Peace for Socio-Ecomonic Development". And of course, our indefatigable royal father, the Ewusi of Makun, Oba Timothy Oyesola Akinsanya is going to preside over this week-long colourful ceremony".

Otunba Atoloye said this year festival begins on Sunday, February 18 with marathon and interdenominational service during when the Christians, Muslims and the traditionalists will hold special prayers for the continued prosperity of Makun community.

This will be followed on Tuesday with a public lecture titled "Exploring Cultural Values and Peace for Socio-Ecomonic Development" to be delivered by Prof Adisa Ogunfolakan of AG Leventis Museum of Natural History, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile Ife, Osun State.

The Cultural day is slated for Wednesday while the final football competition of this year Obaruwa Festival holds on Thursday. The grandfinale holds on Saturday at AUD Primary School, Makun, Sagamu.
