The Southern Youth Association of Nigeria on Wednesday condemned the circulation of fake and misleading information on non-existent bandits attacks all of are targeted towards creating unnecessary panic and false sense of insecurity in the country.
The youth group in a Sunday statement signed by its National President, Pastor Okikiola Fayomi urged Nigerians to desist from spreading unsubstantiated claims of bandits attack maintaining that the country must remain united and join forces with the government to subdue the challenge of insecurity.
Fayomi has equally called on the government at all levels to prioritize strengthening security architecture around schools by constructing perimeter fencing, installing functional CCTV as well as deployment of security personnel to build impregnable wall of defence around the school areas.
The group sympathized with the families of the abducted school children and teachers in Oyo State and urge them to remain hopeful, steadfast, and prayerful as security agencies and relevant government authorities continue to work tirelessly towards ensuring the safe rescue and return of the abducted children.
The statement partly reads "The Southern Youth Association of Nigeria (SYAN) call on governments at all levels to treat issues concerning education and the safety of students with the utmost seriousness by taking proactive and sustainable measures to safeguard learning environments across the country.
"We strongly advocates for the provision of adequate infrastructure in all schools, including perimeter fencing, the installation of functional CCTV surveillance systems, and the deployment of well-trained security personnel to ensure the safety and protection of students, teachers, and school property.
"Educational institutions must remain secure places where learning can thrive without fear or intimidation. We express our deep concern over the recent incidents involving the abduction of students.
"We sympathize with the affected families and urge them to remain hopeful, steadfast, and prayerful as security agencies and relevant government authorities continue to work tirelessly towards ensuring the safe rescue and return of the abducted children.
"Furthermore, we appeal to members of the public to exercise caution and responsibility in the dissemination of information.
"Recent developments have shown that several old and misleading videos are being circulated on social media, thereby creating unnecessary panic and confusion. We encourage all citizens to verify information from credible and reliable sources before sharing it with others.
"At this critical moment, Nigerians must remain united, patriotic, and supportive of efforts aimed at restoring peace and security.
"As responsible citizens, we all have a role to play in promoting accurate information and contributing positively to national development.
"The Southern Youth Association of Nigeria remains committed to advocating for the welfare, security, and development of young people across the nation"
Recall that there had recently been protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress, Nigerian Union of Teachers and members of Civil Societies over the abduction of 39 students and seven teachers by some armed bandits who stormed not less than three schools in Oriire local government area of Oyo State over two weeks ago leaving in their trail blood and anguish.
The affected schools include Community Grammar School, L.A Primary School both in Ahoro-Esinele, and Baptist Nursery and Primary School, in Yawota.
While a teacher and one other resident were shot dead during the invasion, the terrorists have also in a circulating video beheaded one of the abducted teachers, Mr Micheal Oyedokun, a Mathematics teacher during his lifetime.
