Ogun youths demand separation of youth ministry from sports


The national leadership of Ijebu Youth Association (IYA) has urged Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to as a matter of urgency create a  separate Ministry of Youth Development.

The National President of the youth group, Comr. Okikiola Fayomi made this call during 2022 Youth Fair and Empowerment programme of the association held on Wednesday at The Cathedral Church, Italowajoda, Ijebu Ode.

Comr Okikiola Fayomi disclosed that it was time the government created a separate Ministry that will see to a lot of issues affecting youth development while a Ministry of Sports will squarely face sporting development.

He said "the government really have to consider creating a separate Ministry for the youth and not just lump it with sports.  With the present arrangement, the ministry only faces the sporting aspect as if that is the only aspect of youth development, what about acquisition of vocational training among others? The time for the review is now because the 21st century youth must be properly empowered to provide future leadership".

Okikiola while lauding Gov Dapo Abiodun for his investment in infrastructural development such as the recently completed Ijebu Ode-Epe road, the ongoing Agro-Cargo Airport projects as well as the ongoing Ilisan-Ago Iwoye road among others equally plead with the governor to do more with provision of job opportunities for the youth.

The youth leader also urged Nigerian youths to resist the  temptation of being used as political thugs as the race for the 2023 elections hots up advising them to rather identify and pitch their tent with a political party that is committed to advancing youth course.

He urged federal government to quickly resolve the ASUU strike and stop behaving as if it derives joy in seeing the future leaders of the country wasting away.


Highlights of the occasion included presentation of awards of excellence to Adron Home boss, Adetola Emmanuelking represented by Barr Kemi Osude, Rt Revd Dr Rotimi Oludipe, Diocesan Bishop, Ijebu Anglican Diocese, Dr Tolani Hassan, National President of Yoruba Youth among others.
