The Special Assistant on Media to the former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Kehinde Akinyemi has provided traffic sign posts through his community development association in Abeokuta area of Ogun State.
Akinyemi is the Chairman of Ajagbohun Central Community Development Association (CDA) Ajagbohun in Somorin- Obantoko area of Abeokuta under Odeda local government area of the state.
The about 3km Somorin-Ajagbohun-Ilugun road, which is giving relief to both intra and inter-state motorists since construction early this year, has been witnessing high volume of traffic resulting in incessant road crashes, which often times lead to deaths. The recent one was recorded in late July, when a 9 year old boy was knocked down by an over speeding motorist.
Also, a member of the community, Elder Womiloju was full of thanks and praises, when an artisan barely after visiting him, escaped been crushed by an articulated bus driver on the road.
Since the report from State Government indicated that there is still plan to lay a second layer of asphalt on the road, the proposed plan by the CDA to construct bumps was shelved, hence, the resolve to provide traffic sign posts to reduce if not completely end the incessant accidents, it was gathered.
At the brief opening ceremony of the traffic signs on Saturday, Akinyemi, hinted that the CDA through the committee that was set up for the project, met with the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) and the officials of the State Ministry of Transport before the green light was given to construct the traffic sign posts.
"The Government Officials came to inspect the road and spotted the points to erect the traffic sign posts. They also provide us the specifications to carry on each one. We understood that the road would be given another asphalt laying, so the idea to construct traffic sign posts was accepted. It was during the inspection, that six spots were identified and we set to work. We thanked God that we are accepted, listened to and appreciated.
"They recognised the synergy between the CDA and State government particularly realizing that as a responsible and responsive community development association, government alone cannot do it all, hence our little contribution on the road.
"I must thank my understanding members as we genuinely contributed towards the success of the project. And this is the result today. We can only enjoin motorists to be mindful of these traffic signs to avoid accidents on the road," Akinyemi said.
The CDA leader, SE Adeniyi Ose observed that, "it is one thing to have willing members, the other important thing is to have a purposeful leadership to drive the willing members to the promise land and that is what we are witnessing with Akinyemi's leadership in this CDA.
"I am sure that with these traffic sign posts, accidents will reduce on this road. We want to thank those who gave us the approval to carry on and all members of Ajagbohun Central Community Development Association for supporting without looking back. That is why we are different and we shall continue to excel," he disclosed.
The Chairman of the Ilupeju Obantoko Area Community Development Committee (CDC), Comrade A.B Ogunseye commended the CDA for the initiative, stressing, "it is a project worthy of emulation by other CDAs.
"Ajagbohun Central Community Development Association is one of the CDAs that is making us proud. I have been shown the other on-going projects that you are doing and I can only say that you should continue as the result will come soon," Ogunseye said.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Head of Operations 2, Obantoko Division, Commander Ayodeji Adeshina, joined the CDC, the CDA leaders and members to officially declared the traffic sign posts opened amid pomp and ceremony.
