A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State during the just concluded 2023 elections, Otunba Segun Showunmi has sent his heartwarming congratulations to the billionaire entrepreneur, Alhaji Aliko Dangote over the successful completion and commissioning of the $18bn Dangote Refineries at Ibeju Lekki on Monday.

Otunba Segun Showunmi in a statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital on Monday, disclosed that Aliko Dangote has just demonstrated another 'can do spirit, courage' and resilience of Nigerians which is worthy of emulation to birth a country that is taking its place in industrial revolution to provide jobs for its teeming citizens.

Showunmi was however not happy that the $18bn investment which was originally designed to be sited at Olokola Free Trade Zone in Ogun Waterside Local Government area of the state was in controversial manner lost to Lagos State. This reportedly happened under the administration of Sen Ibikunle Amosun who governed the state from 2011 to 2019.

Amosun's predecessor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel was said to have embraced the idea of Dangote establishing the refineries in the state and had already allocated land for the purpose around Ogun Waterside area of the state but immediately Amosun came on board, the project met a brick wall making Dangote to take the project to Lagos State.

Showunmi, while lamenting the loss of this investment to Lagos State blamed it on bad politics.

He disclosed that Ogun State lost the project to Lagos State on the altar of bad politics and that those who were responsible for this huge loss which is tantamount to economic sabotage should be duly punished.

Showunmi said "I cannot but wonder what explanation Ogun State has for not housing that project that sits pretty within our Ogun Development Master Plan with Olokola Free Trade Zone in Ogun Waterside! It is time to have a law that punishes economic sabotage occasioned by bad politics!

"No one should be allowed to set back a state on the altar of winning an election, which more than likely has queried integrity. No state can make a steady process if that nonsense is not punished to prevent a repeat.

"The cost of maintaining Governors is way too huge a price to pay, only for the state to now carry huge consequences of their myopic tantrums. A law must be enacted to review and punish this type of economic and development sabotage. Never again.

"Thank God Dangote did not take the project outside the country, which would have provoked me beyond words.
No one must be allowed to be irresponsible at the expense of all of us".
