Three months after, fleeing 46-yr old man arrested for setting wife ablaze in Ogun



Exactly three months after setting his wife, Olayinka Hassan ablaze for failing to cook for him, Afeez Hassan who was said to have escaped into neighbouring Benin Republic is now telling Ogun State command of the Nigeria Police all that he knew about the callous act.

According to statement from the Spokesman of the state police command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the 46-year old man was said to have been arrested for pouring petrol on his wife after which he set the mother of one ablaze.

Afeez was said to have been arrested following a report lodged at Ibogun divisional headquarters by the victim's father, who disclosed that her daughter, Olayinka Hassan was on October 22, 2022 set ablazed by her husband over a minor disagreement, and that the victim had been rushed to an hospital in Ibadan. 

Upon this report, the DPO Ibogun division, CSP Samuel Oladele was said to have quickly mobilized his men and moved to the scene. But before getting there, the suspect had disappeared into thin air.

The police maintained that its operatives had since been on the trail of Afeez until 22nd of January, 2023 when he was eventually apprehended .

On interrogation, Afeez was said to have claimed to have ran away to Benin Republic while also confessing to the commission of the crime blaming it on the devil. 

Narrating what happened on that fateful day, Afeez was said to have told the police that he asked his wife to prepare food for him, but instead of preparing the food, she was busy washing clothes. 


He stated further that he got annoyed because he was hungry and the annoyance made him to pour petrol on her and set her ablaze.

When asked whose clothes the woman was washing, Afeez was said to have confessed that the clothes belong to him

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspect be transferred to Homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and possible prosecution.
