Former Spokesman for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar 2019 Presidential Campaign, Mr Segun Showunmi, on Wednesday at Panseke, Abeokuta declared his intention to contest the 2023 governorship race of Ogun State.
Segun Showunmi made this disclosure at PDP Stakeholders meeting which had in attendance hundreds of party members who came from the 20 local governments of the state. The Stakeholders meeting was presided over by Alhaji Semiu Shobayo.
The popular public commentator while speaking during the declaration disclosed that his decision to throw his hat into the governorship ring was in response to the call of the people who had for sometime been urging him to contest the 2023 governorship ambition in the state.
Showunmi said he was in the race to redefine governance in the state and put smiles on the faces of the people.
He said "For some time now, many people have been calling on me to contest the governorship in the state come next year, I want to say that I have heard your voice very loudly and I am here today to tell you all and the whole world that I will be offering myself to contest for Ogun governorship race come 2023"
"I have been around for a very long time and I served many people too but I have come to realise that I am that leader that I have for a very long time been searching for. I want to say that I will ensure that our state experience exponential development and growth during my time".
Showunmi thereafter went into prayer session after which he said "in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I hereby declare to contest for governorship of Ogun State come 2023 to which the hundreds of party faithfuls at the event chorused 'Amen'.
Earlier, the Chairman of the PDP stakeholders meeting, Alhaji Semiu Shobayo described Segun Showunmi as a brilliant and time tested politician and great manager of men and resources who has all it takes to wipe tears from the faces of residents of Ogun State.
Shobayo said "By popular demand, Segun Showunmi is coming to rescue the people of Ogun from the current hardship imposed by the APC-led government. It is the wish of the people that he should be the occupier of Oke Mosan in 2023.
"He has all it takes to take Ogun State to greater heights. He deserves all the support from the people of the state. The hardship is much and it is a well known fact that Segun won't disappoint us if given the opportunity to direct the affairs of the state.
"He will take us to the promised land. He lives among us and knows what the people want and he will put smiles on the faces of the residents of the state. I hereby ask that we should all rise and support his governorship ambition because it is one project that will put smiles on the faces of many residents of the state".
Similarly, Apostle David Bamigbola, another PDP leader at the event said "we are begging Hon Segun Showunmi to come around and help with the governing of the state. He is intelligent and brilliant. He is God fearing, very sincere, he is accessible and always willing to make life easier for the people. Let's all give him all the support because of an assurance that he will work for the betterment of all in the state".
Members of Inter-Party Advisory Council led by Comr Abayomi Arabambi as well as Alhaji Moshood Adesina were also at the event to drum support for governorship ambition of Segun Showunmi.
