Tension in Ilisan as Hausa residents clash with police

Ogun CP, Lanre Bankole

The serenity of Ilisan Remo, the host community to Babcock University in Ikenne local government area of Ogun State was for the better part of this Friday morning disturbed with the Hausa residents threatening to burn down the Divisional headquarters of the Nigeria Police in the ancient town.

The grouse of the Hausa residents according to information gathered in the town is rooted in the refusal of the police to release two robbery suspects who the police were said to have arrested for attempting to steal a motorcycle belonging to one the Hausas.

The Hausas mobilising themselves across the town had gathered in front of the police station and were about forcing their way into the police station to get the two suspects out and deal them fatal blow of jungle justice before the police repelled them.

The police had to resort to shooting into the air to dislodge the Hausas before sanity was restored.

The Hausas were allegedly said to have been hurling stones and sticks at the police officers as they insisted that they must have their way even if it was illegal.

Even after beating a retreat from the police station, the Hausas moved just about a metre away to the major roundabout of the town blocking the Iperu/Ilisan way.

Efforts reportedly made by community leaders to let the Hausas understand that what they were actually demanding for was illegal and that the police would ensured that justice was done over the suspects arrested were said to fell on their deaf ears.

Our Correspondents however gathered that normalcy has begun retuning to the town with police reinforcement and arrival of the Sagamu Area Commander who is said to have worked with some other community leaders to bring the situation under control.

A source told our reporter that the Hausas had insisted that the two suspects must be meted with jungle justice because of the hard times they had also been subjected to whenever anyone of them fell victims of these robbers who specialised in robbing commercial motorcycle riders of their motorcycles after either killing or inflicting them with grievous injuries.
