Ogun State government has set up panel of enquires to investigate the alleged assault of Nurse Rashidat Adeyemi by Dr.Adeola Olowu at General Hospital Ayetoro, in Yewa North Local government areas.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, who disclosed this in a statement issued in Abeokuta, said government went into action to look into the matter of the alleged battery after it got wind of the information.
Dr.Coker maintained that the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration would not tolerate any harmful acts from government officials.
The Commissioner added that the public service rules frowned at assault, battery and other vices by workers, who were expected to be good role models.
She, however, appealed to members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) to sheathe their swords and cooperate with the government in its efforts to get to the root of the matter.
The Commissioner revealed that the officer responsible had been subjected to Gender-Based Violence valuation, while the panel’s investigation was ongoing.
“I urge the union to release its members to resume back to work, while the government regret the shameful act. We should not let the innocent people of Ayetoro bear the brunt.
“Two wrongs do not make a right. The case has been reported to us. We will not fold our arms to see misconduct, assault and other vices thrive in our health facilities.
“We have set up a panel of enquiry to look into the issue and report back to us without wasting time, and I assure you that necessary disciplinary action will be taken after the findings.
“I want to plead with unions and all concerned stakeholders to give the government the opportunity of doing a thorough investigation,” Dr.Coker stressed.
Meanwhile, it was earlier reported that National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) Ogun State had withdrawn nurses from performing their official duties at the hospital in protest of the incident which they described as barbaric.
NANNM Chairperson, Nurse Funmilayo Roseline Solarin, said in a Press statement that, Dr.Olowu must be redeployed from Ayetoro General Hospital with immediate effect.
According to her, Dr.Olowu must be scolded and posted out of Ayetoro General Hospital by the appropriate authority to prevent future occurrences and also prevent break down of rules and regulations in the entire hospital.
Narrating how the incident occurred, Nurse Solarin said that, Dr. Olowu got angry when he was called upon by Nurse Adeyemi Rashidat around 4am on Saturday 8th January, 2022 to attend to an emergency at the hospital.
"Doctor Olowu was reported to have gotten angry and became aggressive when he was called upon at about 4am on Saturday 8th of January this year to attend to a patient who was rushed in for care.
"In a fit of aggression, he was reported to have slapped Nurse Adeyemi repeatedly, pushed her against the wall which caused her to sustain injuries on the head and face before she was rescued by patient's relative.
"Dr. Olowu claimed that she was disturbing him with what she could have handled without calling on him".
"It is a printed fact that such a barbaric and irresponsible behavior is against public service rules and contravenes nobility".
We therefore demand that Justice be served by appropriate quarters to guide against any future occurrences".
"We say no to barbaric and inhumane behavior. We demand immediate posting of the said doctor out of the facility for safe health delivery and security of our nurses", Nurse Solarin stressed.
