I would have been a journalist if...Ogun CP, Lanre Bankole

Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole says if he is not a policeman today, he would have been a journalist.

He said this on Wednesday evening at the Police Officers Mess, Ibara Estate, Abeokuta, while hosting journalists in the state during an interactive session.

He said, “If I am not a police officer today, I would have been a pressman(journalist).”

Though he never expatiated on his love for journalism, he serenaded journalists in the state for their support to the police, and noted that their work had relegated to the background the work of fake journalists and other purveyors of fake news.

He said this is an era where the media should be in partnership with the law enforcement agencies in achieving effective policing, and annihilating fake news.

He said, “We are in an era whereby policing, law enforcement could be undertaking with the active support of the press.

“Moreso in this period when people can sit in their toilets and start dishing out stories whether true or not to the public.

“But when we have credible press, we will have credible information being delivered to the public.

“I appreciate you for the support we have received from the press over time. We will not take this support for granted. We will continue to have these engagements to ensure your support is giving to you also.

The CP who is a Lagosian promised to protect lives and property in the state.

Lanre Bankole was in company with DCP Abiodun Alamutu, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi and host of the top policemen in the command.

When he assumed duty in the state in October 2021, The CP said “We have a vision and that vision is to make Ogun, the safest or at least, the safest state in the country in terms of security.

“We will also tackle peculiar crisis in Ijebu axis and where there is grey areas, we will make sure that those grey areas are cleared up to make sure life returns to normalcy in Ijebu-Ode.”

The CP joined the Nigeria police as a cadet assistant superintendent of police in March 1990, and has worked in various capacity in different parts of the country such as Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi Port Authority as well as Ogun State Police Commands.

Bankole had at different times worked as divisional police officer in Abigi, Sango, Agbara and Owode Egba respectively, in Ogun State.

He was one time the assistant commissioner of police in charge of Port CID at Port Authority Police Command.
When he was promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police, he was posted to Interpol section of FCIID Abuja as DC Administration and investigation from 2017 to 2020.

He got promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in June 2021 and was posted as CP Interpol Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Alagbon Lagos, where he served until his current appointment as the new commissioner of police Ogun State Command.

The CP has attended various professional courses within and outside Nigeria, notable among them are; junior command course, intermidiate Command course, strategic leadership and Command course at Police Staff College, Jos Plateau State.

He also attended Financial crime course at Administrative Staff College (ASCON) Badagry as well as United Nations logistics officer’s course at Koffi Annan peace keeping& Training centre, Ghana.

He is an holder of Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Literature from University of Lagos. He also has LLB in law from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye and BL from Nigeria Law School, Lagos.

He is happily married and the marriage is blessed with wonderful
