UN honours Nigerian industrialist, Adebayo Soewu with Global Peace Award

United Nations Polac Foundation has urged that collaboration with government organs by well-to-do Nigerians will go a long way in restoring peace and order "in these troubling times".

Director General of the body, Professor Halo Etom, gave the admonition in a keynote address during the Foundation's award of a doctoral degree on Peace Practice and Social Justice (Honoris Causa) on prominent industrialist, Otunba (Alhaji) Adebayo Soewu.

Soewu is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of F.A Feedmills and Farms, and Managing Director of Debash Oil and Gas and Acquabash Water companies.

United Nations Polac Foundation is an international, autonomous institution which was established in 2001, under the United Nations and UNESCO, following the UN General Assembly's resolution declaring 2001-2010 as a decade of peace and non-violence.

Etom affirmed that building individual fellowship with people of quality remains the Foundation's utmost concern.

According to him, instances abound of how Soewu had leveraged on his privileged position in the society to broker truce among feuding communities, groups and individuals.

"If our international association is to maintain its deserving image as the largest and leading peace fellowship organisation in the world, we need to continually build
individual fellowship with people of quality.

"They must be peace advocates who recognise their responsibilities, people to whom a 'sense of family' is the basis for all
conducts at home, professionally and as Polac Fellowship members.

"They must be people who will answer the call to serve, people who will be instrumental to helping us reach our service objectives, not only this year, but for many years to come", he stressed.

Soewu, he said, received a doctorate of peace practice and social justice's honour, having been selected among the best peace advocates in the country by the United Nations-Palac Foundation.

He said this year's bestowal on Soewu, widely known as Dabash, was done in commemoration of 2021 International Day of Peace tagged: 'Recovering Better'.

Etom described Soewu, the Ijebu-born business tycoon as "one of the individuals to celebrate in the power of solidarity for building a peaceful and sustainable world".

Responding, Soewu, who was full of excitement, appreciated the organisation for counting him worthy of the honour.

"It's my joy, I am glad for this historical honour; I dedicate this certificate to the Almighty Allah and humanity.

"This nation deserves peace, and as an advocate of peace, I pray for peace in all corners of this nation; the peace of Allah shall abide with us forever".

Also honoured at the event was the governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, for his efforts during the formation of Amotekun, a Southwest security corps.

Akeredolu who was Special Guest of Honour, was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Security Matters, Alhaji Jimoh Dojumo.
