Two persons reportedly lost their lives while seven others were injured as a driver of Toyota Sienna lost control of the vehicle and ran over commuters at a bus stop at Gudugba, in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State on Saturday.
According to traffic report, the sad incident occurred at 7.32am along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway inbound Abeokuta.
The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the vehicle involved bore a number plate KRD 900GV.
He added that two other vehicles, brown Ford with number late AAB 439 XB ,and a tricycle with number late AKM 791 VP, were also caught up in the accident.
Giving the detail, he said the two victims who died were a minor and an old man.
He said, however, the mother of the minor survived the accident.
Akinbiyi added that the seven victims were suffered varying degrees of injuries were three males and four females.
While the remains of the dead victims had been deposited in the morgue of the General Hospital, those injured are also receivinh treatment in the same facility.
He said, “According to eyewitness account, the Toyota Sienna driver was speeding and in its attempt to avoid a pot hole, lost control and rammed into commuters by the road side waiting to board buses to their destinations.
“In the process, two casualties were presumed dead, a minor (whose mother was alive) and an old man, while seven other commuters were injured.”
Akinbiyi said the driver of the Toyota Sienna has been arrested and taken to Itori Divisional Police Station, with the accidented vehicles involved in the multiple crash..
While TRACE Corps commiserates with the families of the deceased, it again urged drivers to regulate their speed and avoid speeding.
The agency equally advised traders to stop displaying their ware on the road and commuters should always stand at designated bus-stops to board vehicles to their destinations.
