The management of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) Ijagun, Ijebu Ode has said that it is still difficult to substantiate the report that a 2019/2020 graduate of the university, one Oshokoya Deborah Ayomikun committed suicide because of a carry over she had in her final year and which would ultimately debar her from convocating with her colleagues this November.
The university while speaking through its Public Relations Officer, Mrs Ayotunde Odubela said that its position on the reported suicide by the said Deborah was hinged on the available record with the university which marked the status of the deceased student as 'passed'
The Adult Education graduate who recently finished her final year exams was reported to have died after taking a poisonous substance suspected to be a sniper.
Deborah was said to have allegedly taken her own life because of a possible extra year due to carryover in one of her final year courses, an online medium, Gistmania had reported
TASUED SUG President, Comr Rabiu Sodiq was also reported to have confirmed the incident on Wednesday while urging students against taking such drastic action no matter the challenges life throws their ways.
The SUG President was said quoted to have said 'It is highly understandable when life brings a lot of burden upon us. Sometimes we get so discourage, frustrated and unhappy. Truth is, life struggles are inevitable and because every problem has a solution, this too shall pass. Please stay alive.
"The moment you start thinking about suicide; just abort mission! Suicide does not only end your dreams, it ends the dreams of those attached to you. Say No To Suicide".
Speaking, however, with our Correspondent, Mrs Ayotunde Odubela explained that, though the school has not received any official information about this sad incident from any quarters, but from its investigation, the school got to know this incident did not happen in any of the school hostels or host communities but at Ijebu Ode where the deceased lived with her parents.
Odubela disclosed further that the information at the disposal of the university also stated the status of the deceased as 'passed' saying that the school is left bewildered that the young lady reportedly took her life because of a carry over in her final year courses and possibly an extra year.
She explained further it was probably possible the late student had carry over in the past which she had done and had been cleared saying that it becomes so difficult to say that the young lady took her life because of a carry over in her final year when her status record with the university said 'passed'
Odubela said "with the status of the young lady reading 'passed' it shows that the student had nothing to do with any extra year or carry over, she has graduated with her mates''
She said the decision of the 2019/2020 academic session graduate to take her life might be rooted in other underlining health challenges.
The school commiserated with the parents of the deceased and pray the good Lord to grant them the fortitude to bear this painful loss.
