The Civil Society of Organisation has blamed poor performance and mishandling of governance as the reasons why Nigerian electorates have always been indifferent to exercising their voting right.
Dr Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi speaking on behalf the Civil Society Organisation stated this while condemning the low turnout of voters during Saturday local government elections in Ogun State.
He said "For the areas we have covered so far, it has been peaceful but there seems to be apathy, you gave a polling unit or a ward of almost 1,000 registered voters and as of the time we visited there, only about 10 had been accredited and voted, that is to say that the turn out us very, very low, but that does not foreclose that they may not come. As at the time we were capturing them, the turn out was very low.
Explaining what could have been responsible for this apathy, Dr Jabi said "the fear of the unknown, insecurity, those in position of authority should do the needful and govern well, you motivate the people, you support them, their welfare is very key. Economic is very bad, governance is very poor, hardship is on the increase, poverty has escalated, inflation is on the point of no return with all these people are losing interest and if these are not addressed appropriately this situation will continue to diminish to a point of no return".
He explained further that "the security arrangement so far has been solid, all the areas that we have visited, the police, NDLEA, NSCDC are all presence there, it has been peaceful. The security personnel are not armed, the people should not be scared of them. They are just there to maintain law and order, they are not disturbing any of the participants or the electorate".
