Ogun State police command on Monday arrested 28-yrs old man, Opeyemi Adeola Ganiyu for killing his mother in law, Abosede Oyewole around Atan-Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota local government area of the state.
According to statement from the Spokesman of the state police command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi on Wednesday, Opeyemi Ganiyu alleged to be a notorious cultist was arrested following a reported complaint lodged against him at Atan-Ota Divisional headquarters of the Nigeria Police.
The police disclosed that one Odunayo Mathew, had reported that the suspect, who is married to the daughter of the deceased, is fond of beating his wife on slightest provocation.
The statement explained that "On the fateful day, the suspect, as usual, beat up his wife and inflicted injuries on her, and that is the reason why his mother-in-law went to see him in order to warn him to desist from beating her daughter.
"On sighting the deceased in his house, the suspect descended heavily on her, beat her mercilessly before stabbing her on her ribs with a knife.
The deceased was rushed to an hospital for treatment, but gave up the ghost in the process and having heard that the victim has died, the suspect took to flight".
The DPO, Ata-Ota Division, CSP Abolade Oladigbolu was said to have immediately detailed his detectives to go after him and bring him to justice.
The detectives were said to have embarked on intelligence based investigation leading them to the suspect's hideout in Ikorodu Lagos state where he was eventually apprehended.
The police said preliminary investigation revealed that Opeyemi is allegedly a member of notorious cult group in the area and was also one of those who led hoodlums to burn down Atan Ota police division during the EndSARS protest when the Divisional Crime Officer was killed on October 21, 2020.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Awolowo Ajogun has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to homicide section of the state criminal investigation and intelligence department for discreet investigation.
